Should I talk with a bank before looking at homes?

The answer is YES!  There are a lot of reasons why you should talk with a bank and get pre-approved before looking at homes .  First and foremost, talking with a bank before looking at homes can help you understand exactly how much you can afford.  There is no reason to look at homes that are listed for $250,000 if you can only afford up to $200,000 or less.

Should I buy another home before selling my current one?

There is no concrete “correct” answer to this question.  There are pro’s and con’s to buying before selling and the same can be said about selling your current home before buying another. Check out this post on the house buying dilemma for more information on this issue.

How Long Does it Take To Buy a Home?

Around 30-45 days. The timeline for finding a house varies greatly from person to person, but once you find your house and have an accepted offer, it usually takes around 30 days to close.

What should I look for when viewing a home?

Most home buyers usually have their own requirements and wish lists. The US Department of Housing and Urban Development provides a helpful list of questions to ask yourself when determining if the home is a good fit. Some of the things you should consider:

  • Is there enough room for both the present and the future?
  • Are there enough bedrooms and bathrooms?
  • Is the house structurally sound?
  • Is the yard big enough?
  • Do you like the floor plan?
  • Will your furniture fit in the space? Is there enough storage space?
  • Does anything need to repaired or replaced? Will the seller repair or replace the items?
